Birthplace of Alsace viticulture, located at the foot of the "3 castles". Classed among "The most beautiful villages in France". Medieval city built in 3 concentric circles around its castle, birthplace of Pope St. Léon IX in 1002. Unique ensemble of 15th C. civil and military architecture. Church with Romanesque tympanum, 13th C. belfry and "Vierge ouvrante" (statue of the Virgin in polychrome wood). Remains of octagonal Roman castle. Historic halftimbered houses, balconies, bay windows and pointed gables. Fountains. Tithe manors. Floral village, having attained the "4 Fleurs" top horticultural award and a winner at the "Entente florale" horticultural awards in 2006. Vineyard trail with guided visits and tastings (apply to Tourist Office). Annual Winegrowers' Festival each 4th weekend of August.
